How Using Rainwater and Greywater Can Help Reverse Climate Change

By Brook Sarson

You may already know that 80% of our water is imported in San Diego County. Water managers have implemented Desalination, and PURE water (wastewater recycled to drinking water) as further diversification strategies. This is great, but expensive and energy intensive. We are missing tremendous opportunities with water that is already here, which in turn decreases the carbon footprint of our water use. The Surfrider Foundation published this great short video, The Cycle of Insanity, back in 2010 to showcase water inefficiencies in Southern California. Reducing the amount of water we move around our state and how much we have to clean our water in order to repurpose it will greatly impact carbon emissions due to energy use. Rainwater and greywater harvesting specifically do this by using resources you already have onsite and using them for a purpose they are well suited to.

Regenerative Construction: an Oxymoron?

By Rebecca Tasker from Simple Construct

At its most basic, construction is a destructive and consumptive process. It requires getting a lot of stuff from somewhere, processing it, and putting it together in a different way. It usually involves mining, logging, milling, refining, smelting, shaping, packaging, and shipping the materials. Then it often involves cutting, nailing, mixing, spraying, coating, sanding, and the use of all manner of power tools. It is inherently destructive (no raw materials = no stuff) and consumptive (no stuff = no building).

Destruction and consumption are fundamentally at odds with regeneration. Regeneration is about renewal, restoration, improvement. In a balanced system, regeneration is the other side of the scales from destruction and consumption.

Because of this, it is has been hard to imagine truly regenerative construction. It is a high bar. The green building movement first focused on doing less harm and using less energy, asking “How do we...
