Cob Oven Workshop

Do you want to build a low cost wood fired oven right in your backyard?

Join us in this upcoming 2 day workshop on how to build a cob oven

Cob Oven

Overview

Cob is a form of building similar to adobe where we mix dirt (sand and clay) with a fiber like dried straw or grass to create a durable, fire resistant building material.

Cob and adobe are traditional building materials for building wood fired cook stoves and ovens in many parts of the world.

Over the course of 2 days, you will learn everything about how to build your own wood fired cob oven including:

  • How to make cob from your local soil
  • How to build the cob dome
  • Adding insulation to your oven
  • Mixing and applying a finish clay plaster to your oven
  • How to cook in the finished wood fired oven.

Cob Oven Building Basics...

Build A Foundation

Using more cob or adobe, stones, rocks, bricks, broken chucks of sidewalk, cinderblocks, or any other solid base of which to build your oven

Set The Hearth Bricks

Using "fire bricks" set the base that will become the floor of your finished oven.

Build A Sand Mold

Just like when you were a kid (or fun loving adult) we will shape moist sand into a dome shape that will later become the void of the oven

Add A 3-4" Cob Layer Over The Sand

Mixing up cob with our hands and our feet we then apply a uniform layer 3-4" over top of the sand

Cover With An Insulation Layer

Using either perlite, empty glass bottles, or straw mixed with clay we add insulation to our oven to retain the heat

Apply A Final Earthen Clay Plaster

Mix a final decorative plaster layer on the oven to protect the oven and give it a great look
